Autumn in the countryside

Harvest season has come. Many areas in Japan are at the midst of autumn leaves, and fruits are ripe, the rice is harvested , which are adding various colors to the landscapes. Yes, this is Japan’s normal autumn, the second celebration in the year coming after cherry blossom season. During this beautiful moment, the place I would definitely recommend you visit is Shirakawago located in the deep in the mountain of Gifu Prefecture. One of World Cultural Heritage Sites designated by UNESCO. You see lots of old traditional houses with thatched roofs shaped in triangles, finding local people still live here. Try going up to the hill where the observation deck is so that you can get a breathtaking view. You might find the steep roofs facing the same directions, east and west, it’s intentional to melt the piled snow on the roofs. So impressive to see the wisdom of the people in the heavy snowfall areas. Once you get inside these houses, you feel the smell of a cooking fire in the sunken hearth, which helps dry up laundry and eliminate pests to protect the wooden structure. Sericulture was carried out, used be one of the major industries to support economy in this remote area . They say ammunition was made secretly during the war.. Snow season is coming very soon.
